Background
Focus on Youth, an HIV prevention curriculum for teens originally produced by the Centers for Disease Control, had not been updated in many years. As the disease progressed in the United States, it became clear that people of color were becoming disproportionately impacted. The CDC wanted the curriculum to be updated and targeted more clearly to African American youth. ETR Associates, a health care educational publishing company, was charged by the CDC to produce a new version.
Target Audiences
African American youth, their teachers, and community leaders.
Objective
To work with the ETR team to produce an up-dated, culturally relevant version of the Focus on Youth HIV prevention curriculum.
Implementation
Served as an editorial consultant on a team comprised of educators and community health providers and activists to revise the content to speak to African American youth. Developed a design for the curriculum cover, which would also provide the direction for all of the future collateral and marketing materials.
Results
Focus on Youth textbook will be published in 2007.
